Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 21, 2026

Verbatype is currently in TestFlight beta. This is a beta-stage privacy policy (written to be accurate about what the app does today) and it may be updated as the product changes before public launch.

Overview

Verbatype is a voice-typing app for people who think in more than one language. Speech recognition runs on your device. When you're online, Verbatype may also use cloud AI services to improve accuracy and phrasing. This policy explains what data that involves, who touches it, and what your options are.

Who we are

Verbatype is made by NMC Apps (New Mining Company LLC). If you have questions about this policy or your data, email hello@verbatype.com.

No account required

There is no sign-in, no account, and no in-app purchases in the current build. To identify your device for syncing your own history, the app generates a random identifier when you install it. That identifier isn't tied to your name, email, or any other personal account. Unless you choose to email us, we have no way to connect it to your real-world identity.

What we collect

  • Audio you dictate. Recorded so it can be transcribed into text.
  • Transcribed text. The written result of your dictation, including any corrections you make.
  • A per-install device identifier. A random identifier generated on your device, used to sync your history and manage usage, not a name, email, or account.
  • Basic usage data. How much you've used cloud features, used to manage fair-use limits.

We do not collect contacts, photos, location, or other data unrelated to dictation.

How we process your data

On-device speech recognition

The core transcription (WhisperKit, running on Apple's Core ML / Neural Engine) happens on your iPhone or Mac. Your audio is turned into text locally. It does not need to leave your device to produce a transcription.

One-time model download

On first launch, the app downloads its speech-recognition models (roughly 700MB) from our own server, hosted on Cloudflare. This installs the models on your device and happens once. It is not an ongoing stream of your data to us.

Cloud AI processing (when you're online)

When your device has a connection, Verbatype can also send your audio and/or transcribed text to improve accuracy and clean up phrasing, using:

  • Groq: cloud speech-to-text, run alongside the on-device result.
  • Google Gemini: text normalization (turning spoken phrasing into cleaner written text).

These requests go through our own server (a Cloudflare Worker acting as a proxy) rather than your device talking to Groq or Gemini directly. We send them only what's needed to transcribe and normalize your dictation, and we don't authorize them to use it to build advertising profiles. We do not control what Groq or Google do with data on their end beyond fulfilling that request.

Bring your own key (optional)

Some builds offer a "bring your own key" mode, where you can supply your own Groq or Gemini API keys instead of using ours. In that mode, those keys are stored only on your device and used to call the providers directly for your own requests. We don't see or store your keys on our servers.

Storage and retention

Your transcription history (text) is synced to our backend (a Cloudflare Workers service backed by a database) so you can see your own dictation history and so we can improve normalization quality over time. Audio you dictate is processed on-device and, when cloud processing is used, sent to the providers named above to produce your transcription; we don't use it for advertising and don't sell it. This is a beta product, and we haven't yet built a self-serve "export" or "delete everything" control inside the app. If you want your data deleted, email hello@verbatype.com and we'll do it manually.

No accounts, no purchases, no ads, no tracking

The current build has no sign-in, no in-app purchases, and no subscription billing. We don't run third-party advertising or analytics/tracking SDKs, and we don't sell your data to anyone.

The keyboard and "Full Access"

Verbatype includes a custom keyboard extension for iOS. iOS requires "Full Access" to be granted for any keyboard extension that needs to communicate with its host app. Verbatype's keyboard uses that permission only to talk to the main Verbatype app (through a private, on-device channel) so it can display and edit the text you've dictated. The keyboard does not log, read, or transmit anything you type outside of Verbatype's own dictation flow, and it makes no network requests of its own.

Children's privacy

Verbatype is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Your rights

Because there's no account system yet, your data is tied to your device's random identifier rather than an identity we can look up by name. If you'd like a copy of your data or want it deleted, email hello@verbatype.com from the address you'd like us to reply to, and we'll help, including deleting your transcription history from our backend.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Verbatype moves from beta toward a public release, for example when accounts, subscriptions, or new AI features are added. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
